Established in 1986, the Computer Integrated Manufacturing Laboratory (CIMLab) at the University of Toronto was founded to advance research in robotics, automation, and computer-integrated manufacturing. As robotics evolved toward increasingly intelligent and autonomous systems, the laboratory expanded its research to address the fundamental engineering challenges of robotic perception, decision-making, coordination, and human–robot interaction. Today, CIMLab develops autonomous robotic systems through research that combines computational methodologies with experimental validation on real robotic platforms, including aerial robots, mobile robots, mobile manipulators, and assistive robotic systems.

Although robotic systems differ widely in their sensing capabilities, physical design, and intended applications, many rely on common principles for interpreting information, coordinating actions, and adapting to uncertainty. CIMLab investigates these principles and develops computational methods that improve robotic autonomy across a broad range of robotic systems and applications, including  search and rescue, infrastructure inspection, environmental monitoring, and assistive technologies that enhance safety, independence, and quality of life.

We wish to acknowledge this land on which the University of Toronto operates. For thousands of years it has been the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and most recently, the Mississaugas of the Credit River. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work on this land.
